I was glad to have the chance to
interact with Mohammed through a different lens. I can see a huge improvement in not only Mohammed’s behavior, but
all together attitude towards school and my class in particular. I would’ve wanted to see more parent
involvement throughout this process, but things worked out. I am actually
surprised of the effectiveness of the system in place, considering it relied
heavily on parent support. But I believe that just showing Mohammed that we all
care for his well being and we wanted him to be successful in school is the
most important part of this whole activity.
The most important outcome from this
whole process in my opinion is the strong relationship Mohammed and I were able
to build. I enjoyed seeing him in different non-structured settings. I was able
to start conversations that allow us to grow a sense mutual respect.
Not only would I recommend
this strategy to a colleague, but I already have. I was able to observe another
student displaying similar types of behavior and started the process (without
the mentoring) with him. The nice thing about this is that the data we use is
collected through a system that provides us with nice reports and a behavior
RTI model that helps us design the intervention more proactively.
